Po-Hi senior Megan Malloy has earned the Gold Award from the Girl Scouts, the highest achievement a Girl Scout can achieve. The award recognizes Girl Scouts in grades 9 thru 12 who act in their communities by tackling an issue they are enthusiastic about and developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global problems.
Her project was to make “flag bags” for every troop in town. Inside was a flag, color guard sashes, and a script for the caller to read aloud. A flag ceremony is a Girl Scout tradition of raising and lowering the flag at the beginning and end of each day. This dates back to the 1940s and Megan said she wanted to keep the chore alive for younger girls.
“I held a meeting with all the leaders in town and a few Daisey troops to have a mock flag ceremony. I taught them the history and the importance of the Gold Award through my PowerPoint,” she said. “Everyone had a fabulous time!”
In total, the Gold Award took her 80 hours. “I had to sew sashes, which was something I had never done so I enjoyed learning a new skill. I also designed the bags and used a heat press to melt the vinyl into place.”
“I made sure the scripts were laminated as well because Girl Scouts are prepared for any type of weather while at camp!”
Megan will be recognized for her project next April in Tulsa by GSOEK.
“I have already earned the Juliet Low scholarship from Girl Scouts so this was the cherry on top of my 12 years of service,” she said. “I want to thank Stacy Penny and my parents for keeping me on the path to success.”
