Kay County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy Begins in March, Applications Being Accepted Now

Kay County Sheriff Steve Kelly, his deputies and staff are excited to begin accepting applications for the annual Kay County Sheriff Citizen’s Academy.  Applications can be picked up at the Kay County Sheriff’s office or by calling 580-362-3250 and a copy will be emailed to you. You can also find the application on the Kay County webpage to download.

The academy is a 12 week program held on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Kay County Sheriff’s office in Newkirk and at Pioneer Technology Center in Ponca City.

This academy is designed to promote a better understanding of the Sheriff’s office policies and procedures and the issues that law enforcement officers face on a daily bases. It was established to foster a spirit of cooperation between the county, the citizens and their Sheriff’s office.

Citizens will learn about virtually every aspect of a deputy’s job, from recruiting, administration, patrol operations, dispatch communications, traffic enforcement, criminal law, juvenile offenders, detectives, crime scene investigations, K9 operations and the corrections facility.

Community involvement is the most powerful tool a law enforcement agency has in the fight against crime. After the academy,  participants will have the tools necessary to help the Kay County Sheriff’s office and other law enforcement in the prevention of crime and keeping our community safe.

Applications need to be turned in at the Kay County Sherriff’s office, 1101 West Dry Road in Newkirk, by Friday, March 10, 2023.

The Citizens Academy will begin Thursday, March 16, 2023.

The academy is free but class size is limited.

It is intended to enhance community relations and provide citizens with insights into the criminal justice system. All applications must reside in the Kay County area, be 18 years of age or older and must pass a background check before being accepted into the academy. ***
