Kaw Lake eagle watch Saturday

The Kaw Lake Ultimate Eagle Watch is Saturday, with multiple events and locations.

One component is eagle viewing by horseback with guides Rick Boyd and Lori Young. Riders will meet at Sarge Creek Campground — bring your horse and a sack lunch. The tour is from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

At the Kaw City Community Center, 700 Morgan Square, the doors open at 7 a.m. with refreshments. A guided eagle viewing tour departs at 7:30 a.m.

From 9 to 9:45 a.m., a history of the eagle and its habitat will be given by Mark Howery at the center. There will be a break with refreshments, and then at 10 a.m. another guided tour departs. Also at 10, there will be a presentation on wildlife rehabilitation challenges from the Wildcare Foundation.

Another break is scheduled at 10:45 a.m., followed by a live eagle from Sutton Avian Research Center with Ryan VanZant from 11 to 11:45 a.m.

Another tour eaves the center at 1:30 p.m.

At the Kaw Nation Learning Center, 803 Washunga Drive, the doors also open at 7 a.m. with refreshments. The first guided tour leaves at 7:30 a.m.

From 9 to 9:45 a.m., Luther Pepper will present a session on the importance of eagles to Native Americans. After a break for refreshments, another tour leaves at 10 a.m. Also at 10, Gene Young presents a session on why bald eagles winter at Kaw Lake.

There will be a break at 10:45. The last tour leaves at 1:30 p.m.

At the Kaw City School, 904 Washunga, the doors open at 8 a.m. with refreshments. Adansonia Wildlife presents a session on the wildlife around us from 9 to 9:45 a.m. There is a break at 9:45 a.m., followed by a presentatioin by Jean Neal on getting involved in wildlife rehabilitation. Another break is at 10:45 a.m.

Lunch is available at several locations. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a free Native American luncheon including corn soup, fry bread and grape dumplings will be served at the Kaw Nation Community Center, just west of Washunga Bay.

Indian tacos will be available for $6 at the First United Methodist Church, 457 Hickory Drive, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Sugar Shack, 400 Morgan Square N., will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

PJ’s Fish and More, 711 Morgan Square, will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Transportation for the free Native American lunch at the Kaw Nation Community Center will be provided from the Kaw City Community Building and Kaw Nation Learning Center departing at 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
