The East Middle School Student Council has been designated as a State Honor Council for its exemplary leadership training. To qualify for State Honor Council, students have to do many service projects, attend the Leadership Conference and write articles on Student Council. Service projects so far this year includes announcements and pledges daily, hosting Spirit Week during Homecoming, a Back-to-School Dance and decorating doors of teachers and custodians throughout the school year.
“We always start with Wildcat Way, then Halloween and fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Susie Schatz, advisor. “In the second semester we decorate doors for winter, Valentine’s Day and spring.”
The students are also secret pals and are expected to perform kind things for teachers. This year the group also made fleece blankets for a class at the Washington Pre-K Center and plan to schedule additional activities there.
“We sponsor a food drive in the fall for our school food pantry and plan to take Christmas cards made to the Ponca City Nursing Home,” said Schatz. “We are also planning another dance in the second semester, along with a food drive for the Humane Society, sponsor a Hat Day fundraiser and visit another nursing home go give Valentines to the residents. At the end of the year we participate in Teacher’s Week by holding many activities and presenting gifts for the teachers. We strive to do more and become more involved with our school and community.”
“We would never have been able to qualify for Honor Council without our parents and our EMS staff and administrators. They all have played a huge part in us earning the State Honor Council. We also want to thank PCPS Superintendent Shelley Arrott for always being so supporting and encouraging us.”
