Women’s Health Initiative Passes House on International Women’s Day

OKLAHOMA CITY — A bill that requires insurance companies to cover a routine, physician-ordered women’s health procedure unanimously passed the House floor Tuesday.

House Bill 3504, authored by Rep. Melissa Provenzano, D-Tulsa, requires insurance companies to cover diagnostic mammograms when ordered by a physician.

According to the American Cancer Society, a diagnostic mammogram is still an x-ray. However, more pictures are taken so that any areas of concern can be carefully studied.

“This legislation helps women,” Provenzano said. “Too many Oklahomans have experienced or have a family member who has experienced a breast cancer diagnosis. We know that early detection is the key to survival, and this legislation removes a financial barrier that could prevent early detection.”

HB3504 is now eligible to be heard in the Senate.

“I appreciate the members for prioritizing women’s health today,” Provenzano said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to get this legislation passed for Oklahomans.”
