Alert: 14-Day County-Wide Burn Ban Issued for Kay County

Beverly Cantrell - February 15, 2022 9:47 am

Kay County is currently under a 14-Day County-Wide Burn Ban issued by the Kay County Commissioners on February 14, 2022.

Any person convicted of a violation of a county-issued burn ban shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to a fine of not more than $500.00, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.

One of the biggest culprits of fires are the careless discarding of fire materials, such as cigarettes. If you are a smoker, it’s recommended that before you throw your smoking materials away, you should submerge them in sand or water to make sure it’s completely extinguished.

Don’t burn outdoors and never park on dry grass.

If there’s a chance you could be in the path of potential wildfires, there are precautions you should know. A few of tips from the U.S. Forestry Service to keep in mind include 1) keeping fire-safe zones around your house or other outbuildings by cleaning away flammable vegetation and debris at least 30 feet out; 2) Don’t leave running vehicles near dry grass and 3) make sure you have an evacuation plan.
