OHP and Blackwell EMS Respond to Accident on I-35 Near Braman Thursday Morning

A collision occurred Thursday morning at approximately 6:42 on Southbound Interstate 35 at mile marker 229, 1 mile west of Braman in Kay County.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol report says Julian Smith, age 27, of Selma , Alabama was driving a 2006 Honda Accord and was stopped in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 and was struck by a 2018 Ford F350 driven by Norma Gonzalez, 40, of Olathe, Kansas causing both vehicles to come to rest on the shoulder of Interstate 35. A third vehicle a 2015 Peterbilt driven by Teonilo Rodriguez 49, of Wichita, Kansas, departed the roadway to the right hitting a road sign, coming to rest on the outside shoulder.

Smith was extricated from his vehicle by Blackwell EMSA and transported by Blackwell EMS Services to Wesley in Wichita, Kansas where he was admitted in critical condition with head injuries.

Gonzalez was transported by Blackwell EMS Services to Wesley in Wichita, Kansas and admitted in fair condition with leg injuries.

A passenger in the Gonzalez car, Ventura Rocha, 42, Olathe, Kansas was uninjured. Two juvenile passengers in the vehicle a 12 year old from Olathe, was taken by Blackwell EMS  to Wesley in Witchita and a 16 year old from Olathe was taken by private vehicle to Wesley in Wichita. Both were each treated and released.

Rodriguez was uninjured.

Investigated by OHP Trooper Demming, Assisted by Trooper King, and Blackwell EMS.

The cause of the collision was due to a vehicle stopped in the roadway.
