Superintendent Shelley Arrott

Ponca City Public Schools-

The Ponca City School District has been advised that there may be a national post on social media platform TikTok referring to school safety. The alleged post refers to a national threat to school safety for every school in the U.S., even elementary, on Friday, Dec. 17. While the district has NOT been made aware of any posts circulating in Ponca City, we are closely monitoring the situation and taking it seriously.

Out of an abundance of caution, the district has been in contact with the Ponca City Police Department regarding the alleged post and there will be an added security presence, both visible and unmarked, on Friday, Dec. 17, at all school sites. There may also be officers greeting students at school sites as an additional safety precaution.

This alleged situation serves as a good reminder of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if threats are not credible, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families and staff. We ask our families to monitor their children’s social media activity and speak with them about proper online behavior.

If you or your child becomes aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere, please notify a school staff member, a trusted adult or contact the Ponca City Police Department at 767-0370.

Again, we are not expecting any issues and we will follow our safety protocols as we normally do. However, practicing safety with an abundance of caution is ALWAYS best in any situation, and we appreciate our trusted relationship with the Ponca City Police Department to ensure the safety of our children IS the top priority.

We are looking forward to a festive day of learning with our students tomorrow before the Winter Break begins. As always, thank you for your partnership as we work to ensure a safe, secure and positive learning environment for our students.

Sincerely,

Shelley Arrott

Ponca City Superintendent
