TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Officials say a police officer shot and killed a man who had taken a hostage during a confrontation outside a Tulsa convenience store.

Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg says a 36-year-old man who had a knife appeared to be suicidal inside the store at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. The man had grown agitated and cut himself. Officers encountered the man inside the store and followed him outside and across the busy parking lot, working to de-escalate the situation. However, the man grabbed and held his knife to the throat of a passing bicyclist, prompting an officer to shoot him.

The hostage was not hurt.
