LAWTON, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma woman has been sentenced to six months in jail for stealing more than $11,000 from her elderly father.

The Lawton Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/1zPAihJ ) 52-year-old Janetta Whitethunder was also sentenced to 10 years of probation Tuesday. She pleaded guilty in January to one count of exploitation of an elderly adult.

Whitethunder’s father had been diagnosed with dementia and was a resident at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center when Whitethunder stole from him. She cashed 18 checks between December 2011 and February 2012 and police say she tried to scam him out of more than $90,000.

A bank employee contacted the man’s son after Whitethunder tried to close his account multiple times while he wasn’t there. The son called police.
