Ponca City resident injured in Tonkawa collision

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that a personal injury collision occurred on US-177, 0.4 miles north of South Avenue, which is about 1 mile north of Tonkawa, OK in Kay County.

The patrol said the accident involved a 2019 Jeep Renegade driven by Tanner Smith [sic], 27, of Ponca City, OK. Smith was transported by Tonkawa Fire/EMS to Blackwell Regional Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition with head, trunk external, and trunk internal injuries.

The Highway Patrol’s report stated that Smith’s vehicle was northbound on US-177 and departed the roadway to the left, striking a culvert. The vehicle went airborne and rolled an undetermined number of times, coming to rest on its passenger side on the west shoulder of the highway. The report indicates that seatbelts were equipped and in use; airbags were equipped and deployed in combination. The report notes an odor of alcohol on the driver and the cause of the collision is attributed to driving under the influence.
