Oklahoma motorists urged to watch for roaming deer

SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma game officials are urging motorists to be on the lookout for deer on state roadways this fall.
Pottawatomie County Game Warden Mike France says that with temperatures getting cooler, deer are moving around for migration and mating season and can quickly dart into traffic and cause collisions with unsuspecting motorists.
The Shawnee News-Star reports deer can cross a roadway at any time but are more prevalent at night, especially around dusk and dawn.
The fall migration and mating season for deer runs from October through December along with various hunting seasons for deer.
Hundreds of crashes occur each year involving deer. Since 2005, there’s been an average of two fatalities each year from deer-related accidents in Oklahoma, with the exception of 2009 when six fatalities were reported.
