After Second Vaccination: Small Number of Teens have Heart Issues

Federal health officials say some teens have experienced heart issues after their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there have only been a small number of cases of heart muscle inflammation so far.

“Myocarditis, which is inflammation of the heart muscle, is not a heart attack or a stroke,” said Dr. Charlie Sperrazza, an OU professor of pediatric cardiology.

Sperrazza told KOCO 5 that experts are studying a small number of cases that have been reported in multiple countries among young people who recently received their second dose of one of the COVID-19 vaccines.

“It’s where you get immolation from a virus or from the vaccine,” Sperrazza said.

He said there’s no need to panic. It’s a very small number of minors who have had this reaction.

“There’s been at least 4 million kids vaccinated under the age of 17 so far, and the cases that have been reported have only been a handful,” Sperrazza said.

He explained that at this time, no one can prove that it’s linked to the vaccine yet, but health experts are looking into it.

“It would take a lot more studies and more cases to come to that correlation,” Sperrazza said.

For anyone who has a child with underlying health issues, Sperrazza encourages them to get their child vaccinated because the risk of getting COVID-19 could be more dangerous than the possibility of inflamed heart muscles.
