New gun law, domestic violence law now in effect

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – Laws to expand gun rights, help combat domestic violence and expand the punishment for human trafficking in Oklahoma are going into effect today.

They are among about 250 laws approved by the Oklahoma Legislature and signed by Governor Mary Fallin this year that go into effect on Saturday.

One measure makes it lawful for a person who is licensed to carry a handgun to store it out of view in a locked vehicle when the vehicle is left unattended on school property.

Another creates a new procedure for law enforcement authorities who respond to domestic violence situations to assess the victim’s level of physical danger.

And a measure involving human trafficking requires that perpetrators serve at least 85 percent of their sentences upon conviction.
