PONCA CITY (News9)  –  A 12-year-old Oklahoma boy is recovering at a Missouri hospital after crashing into a school bus while riding a bicycle in Ponca City.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Prentice Road and East South Avenue, east of Ponca City.

Family said Julian Aguilar was at a best friend’s house and riding a bicycle down the driveway. Julian lost control while riding down a hill at the end of the driveway and crashed into a Ponca City school bus.

Eight students were on the bus at the time of the crash. Neither they nor the bus driver were hurt.

Julian was seriously hurt, and air lifted to a hospital in Wichita.

“He actually lost his right leg and there is a possibility that they are going to take the rest of it up to his hip,” said Ashley Aguilar, Julian’s mother. “If anyone knows my kid, they know he is a very go getter, athletic kid. He loves all sports.”

Aguilar said her son is currently in the middle of soccer season and is also playing AAU basketball in the Ponca City area.

Aguilar said five hours of surgery Monday allowed doctors to fix many things including a ruptured aorta and put screws in Julian’s pelvic area.

“Today was pretty difficult because he took his hand and he was like pointing at himself,” Aguilar said. “We just told him ‘You’re OK,’ and he asked if he was going to walk so it was really difficult.”

In just two days, a Go Fund Me page launched by friends has helped raised over $30,000 for medical and rehabilitation expenses.

“It’s overwhelming and it’s just amazing (how) our community has come together for my son, it makes me feel happy,” said Aguilar.

It’s too soon to tell what the future may hold. Whatever that may be, the Aguilar family counts their blessings that they will be able to find out together.

“By the grace of God, with everything that has been going on, my son is still here with me and I am grateful for that,” Aguilar said. “I’m grateful for the two young boys that were there and stood over my son and told him, ‘Stay awake, they’re almost here. ‘”

Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
