Oklahoma House panel to discuss new standards

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – Now that the Oklahoma Legislature has successfully scrapped Common Core education standards, a House committee is meeting to discuss the next steps for developing new standards for Oklahoma students.
The House Education Committee is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the state Capitol to discuss education standards, as well as all of the state and federal testing that is required of Oklahoma students.
Common core is a set of standards in math and English that were repealed by the Legislature amid opposition mostly from grassroots conservative groups.
The state Department of Education has launched a process for developing new standards, but in the meantime the state has reverted to the previous standards that were in place in 2010.
