PCPD Warns of scam targeting grieving survivors

Ponca City Now - October 9, 2014 2:44 pm

A scam targeted at grieving survivors has come to the attention of the Police Department.

A widow was contacted by telephone by a person identifying themselves as a representative from Hospice asking for a copy of her husband’s death certificate and checking account information.

“Hospice of North Central Oklahoma is a non-profit agency which provides quality end of life care at no expense to the patient” according to Marta Sullivan, CEO of HNCOK. “Hospice never asks for death certificate of their patients and certainly would never ask for financial information”, she added.

If you are contacted by anyone identifying themselves with Hospice asking for financial information, please contact the Police Department immediately. Fortunately this widow did not provide any information to the fraudulent caller.
