WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 12-13-20 as of 8 p.m.

Mike Seals - December 13, 2020 11:11 pm

Travel conditions in western Oklahoma have improved into the evening hours, but slick and hazardous areas remain a concern in portions of central and eastern Oklahoma tonight. If travel is necessary in these areas, drivers should be alert to black ice conditions, which can cause a thin layer of ice to develop on wet roadways.

Salt, sand and plowing operations continue to be underway in central and eastern counties to treat remaining areas of slush and ice. Crews in south-central Oklahoma are also closely monitoring for refreezing in the overnight hours and will treat areas as needed. With temperatures falling, slick areas can quickly develop. Drivers should go slow, be alert to changing conditions and plan extra travel time.

View www.okroads.org for a map of current closures and snowplow cameras to check conditions before traveling.

NOTE: This office will provide condition updates as conditions change.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

  • Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be aware of “black ice,” which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
  • Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
