Representative studies fracking in the area

District 37 Representative Steve Vaughn said his phone has been ringing with concerned constituents. They said their water wells are running dry or becoming contaminated. Vaughn is addressing this issue tomorrow at the state capitol.

"I have this area of people telling me I need to do this, so you know what I’m going to do a study on this," Vaughn said. "You tell me the things that are happening, you show me what we can do. Then if we need to do it, then we’re going to write a bill and take it into legislation, and say you know legislators this is a problem in my area and this is what we’re thinking about doing and everybody agrees this is what we need to do."

These studies are called interim studies and there are about 135 happening in the state right now. During this study they’ll discuss fracking, fish kills and water table levels.

Vaughn said more wells are coming, which means more fracking but feels this could benefit the area.

"I’ll tell you whenever more wells come and the more fracking that we do and the more we get there comes the pay day, and the pay day is this, what do you do with what’s left over," Vaughn said.

This study is the first step to developing a bill. It’s a public meeting with guest speakers from the water board. If the committee agrees this is an issue they will develop a bill.

Vaughn said it’s undeniable that fracking and earthquakes go hand-in-hand, but is leaving that study to Representative Jason Nelson.
