WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 10-26-20 as of 8:30 p.m.

Mike Seals - October 26, 2020 11:31 pm

Tonight slick and hazardous conditions continue to be reported in portions of western and north-central Oklahoma, including the Panhandle. If overnight travel is necessary, drivers should use extreme caution, especially on bridges and overpasses which tend to develop slick conditions ahead of highway pavements.

Crews from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation are continuing salt and sand operations in western and north-central counties, and also closely monitoring areas with rain in in eastern and central Oklahoma. Conditions can quickly change as temperatures are expected to be at or below freezing.

In Caddo and Grady Counties, crews are reporting freezing drizzle along with possible downed trees and lines in some areas. In the Oklahoma City metro, crews continue to apply salt and sand to slick areas on bridges.Slick conditions are reported on I-40 east of Oklahoma County, and drivers should be alert to crews and equipment in this interstate corridor.

Travelers should closely follow the forecast and check current road conditions on the interactive travel map at www.okroads.org or through the Drive Oklahoma smart phone app.

NOTE: Additional advisories will be sent from this office as conditions change.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

  • Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be aware of “black ice,” which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
  • Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
