Oklahoma moving inmates from private prison in Cushing

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Corrections is moving about 1,400 inmates out of a private prison in Cushing.

The Cimarron Correctional Facility operated by CoreCivic has been the site of some of the state’s worst prison violence in recent years. However the agency says its decision was part of a cost-cutting move as a result of a $24 million budget cut. That’s about 4.4% of the agency’s annual budget.

Agency officials say they offered to reduce the number of inmates by about 500 at each of its three private prisons, but that CoreCivic instead chose to shutter the Cushing facility.
