The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that a personal injury collision occurred at about 2:14 p.m. Saturday on US177 just south of Brake Road, which is about 1.5 miles north of Blackwell, OK in Kay County.

The patrol said the accident involved a 2002 Buick Le Sabre driven by Tommie Sanders [sic], 89, of Blackwell, OK. Sanders was transported by EagleMed and admitted in fair condition to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, due to internal trunk injuries.

The second vehicle involved was a 2005 Ford F150 driven by Jerry Pitts [sic], 44, of Talala, OK. Pitts was not injured.

The Highway Patrol’s report stated that Sanders’ vehicle was traveling southbound on US177. Pitts’ vehicle was traveling northbound. Pitts’ vehicle crossed the center line, striking Sanders’ vehicle. Sanders’ vehicle departed the roadway to the right, coming to rest on the west side of the road. Pitts’ vehicle departed the roadway to the right, coming to rest on the east side of the road. Sanders was pinned for approximately 10 minutes and freed by the Blackwell Fire Department using the Hurst tool. Seatbelts were equipped in both vehicles, but only in use in Sanders’ vehicle. Airbags were equipped and deployed in both vehicles. The condition of both drivers was apparently normal. The report attributes the cause of the collision to Pitts’ vehicle being left of center.

Investigated by Trooper Kelle #493 of the Kay/Noble County Detachment of Troop K. Assisted by Blackwell Police Department, Blackwell Fire Department, and EagleMed.

This report is based upon the trooper’s investigation of this collision. It may contain the opinion of the trooper.
