Three weeks left to apply to vote in runoff election

Voters have a little more than three weeks left to apply for voter registration in order to vote in the primary runoff election. Cheryl Howard, Kay County Election Board Secretary said the last day to apply to vote in the Aug. 26 election is Aug. 1. The City of Newkirk School District and Frontier School District have also called special elections on that date.

Howard said that persons who are United States citizens, residents of Oklahoma and at least 18 may apply to become registered voters. If you have never been registered to vote, aren’t registered in the county of your residence or need to change registration information you may apply by filling out and mailing an Oklahoma Voter Registration Application form. These also must be postmarked no later than midnight Aug. 1.

Howard said that applications postmarked after that time will still be accepted and processed, but they won’t be approved until after Aug.26. The County Election Board responds in writing to every person who submits an application for voter registration. The response is either a voter identification card listing the new voter’s precinct number and polling place location or a letter that explains the reason or reasons the application for voter registration was not approved. Anyone who has submitted a voter registration application and hasn’t received a response within 30 days should contact the County Election Board office.

Oklahoma voter registration application forms are available at the County Election Board office, located at 201 S. Main St. in Newkirk. They are also at most post offices, tag agencies and public libraries in the county. Applications can also be found here .
