Minority Leader Issues Statement on Gundy’s Comments

OKLAHOMA CITY — House Minority Leader Emily Virgin (D-Norman) released the following statement in response to recent comments by Oklahoma State Football Coach Mike Gundy:

“Mike Gundy’s comments further illustrate the need for the governor to issue a statewide shelter in place order. If Oklahoma is going to beat COVID-19, we need to have a united front against the virus. It is vital that in this time of crisis we listen to medical experts on when it is best to return to work.

“A shelter in place order would apply to all Oklahomans and require the entire state to stay home with the exception of essential travel. Despite what the governor continues to infer, it would not ban trips to the grocery store or pharmacy. It would, however, significantly decrease the amount of time that COVID-19 affects Oklahoma. The stronger the message from the state government, the sooner we will be able to get back to business as usual.”
