WNBA to market to LGBT community

Ponca City Now - May 21, 2014 6:24 am

NEW YORK (AP) – The WNBA is launching a campaign to market specifically to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.

It’s the first league to design such a campaign. The marketing push begins with the launch of a website on Wednesday and the signature event will be a nationally televised "pride" game between Tulsa and Chicago on Sunday, June 22. The league also plans to work with advocacy groups to spread a message of inclusion.

WNBA President Laurel Richie says the league has been marketing to the community for awhile on a local level. The league looked internally at its fan base and determined that 25 percent of lesbians watch games on television.
