Ponca City Now - January 6, 2020 2:51 pm

Kay County Sheriff Steve Kelley announced today that applications are being taken for the Sheriff’s Citizens’ Academy, which begins March 12, 2020, for 12 weeks.

Classes will be held at Pioneer Technology Center and the Kay County Sheriff’s Office training room at 1101 West Dry Road, in Newkirk.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 21.

Applications can be picked up at the Kay County Sheriff’s Office or call (580) 362-3250 to have one emailed or faxed. You can also go to the Kay County webpage and download the application.

The Citizens’ Academy meets on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kay County Sheriff’s Office.

Community involvement is the most powerful tool a law enforcement agency has in the fight against crime,” Kelley said. “This academy is designed to promote better understanding between the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Kay County.”

Citizens will learn about virtually every aspect of a deputy’s job from recruiting, administration, patrol operations, dispatch communications, traffic enforcement, criminal law, juvenile offenders, detectives, crime scene investigations, K9 operations and the corrections facility and many other areas.

Important: This training is not designed to certify citizens to perform law enforcement services. It is to enhance community relations and to provide citizens with insights into the criminal justice system.

All applicants must reside in the Kay County Area and must be 18 years old or older to attend. Applicants must pass a background check before being accepted into the academy.

After the acedemy, you will become more aware of your surroundings in your daily lives,” Kelley said, “and you will have the tools necessary to help the Kay County Sheriff’s Office as well as other area Law Enforcement in the prevention of crime and help keep our community safe.”
