Fatality collision in Payne County

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that a fatality collision occurred at about 5:51 p.m. Saturday on SH51, about three-tenths of a mile west of SH108-N, which is about 4.7 miles east of Stillwater, OK in Payne County.

The patrol said the accident involved a 2012 Mazda 5 driven by Jonathon Wayne Sain (SIC), 45, of Stillwater, OK. Sain was transported by ambulance to Stillwater Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from head, arm, leg, trunk internal, and trunk external injuries.

The second vehicle involved was a 2008 GMC Sierra driven by Matthew Allen Barton (SIC), 40, of Stillwater, OK. Barton was transported by ambulance to Stillwater Medical Center in stable condition with head and trunk internal injuries.

The third vehicle involved was a 2019 Chevrolet Spark driven by Steven Daniel Harshbarger (SIC), 19, of Pawnee, OK. Harshbarger was not injured.

A passenger in Harshbarger’s vehicle, Jeffrey Don Isreal (SIC), 49, of Pawnee, OK was treated at the scene for a head injury.

The Highway Patrol’s report stated that Sain’s vehicle was eastbound in the inside westbound lane of SH51, Barton’s vehicle was westbound in the inside westbound lane, and Harshbarger’s vehicle was eastbound in the eastbound outside lane. Sain’s vehicle struck Barton’s vehicle head on. Barton’s vehicle then went left of center and struck Harshbarger’s vehicle. Sain was pinned for approximately 15 minutes before being freed by the Stillwater Fire Department. Seatbelts were equipped in all vehicles and in use by all but the deceased. The report indicates that the roadway was 4 lanes, undivided, with center turn lane. It further indicates that the road was wet and the weather was cloudy. The condition of Sain and the cause of the collision are still pending investigation. The condition of the other two drivers at the time was apparently normal.
