Flint Knapping Nov. 9 at Marland’s Grand Home

Ponca City Now - October 23, 2019 4:49 pm

The ancient art of flint knapping will be demonstrated by Neil Garrison at Marland’s Grand Home, on Saturday, Nov. 9 in celebration of Native American Heritage Month. Garrison is featured on the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife’s web page as seen here.

In recognition of November being Native American Heritage Month, Marland’s Grand Home will have an educational Listen and Learn series titled “We Rock,” presented by Gary Bracken on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m.

Immediately following the presentation, Neil Garrison, a flint knapping artisan, will recreate the ancient art in order to demonstrate how Native Americans would have chipped tool points and arrowheads out of native stones.

Garrison uses a tool kit that resembles one used by ancient native people. The tool hammers in his kit are fashioned out of deer antlers and his abrader is made of sandstone.  His stone of choice is Kay County flint, which is prevalent throughout the Flint Hills region of north central Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas.

Corn grinding and bead stringing activities will also be available.  There is no charge for attendance.  Seating is limited.  For reservations, please call Marland’s Grand Home at (580) 767-0427.

Part of the collection of tribal arrow points, equipment and tools at the Marland Grand Home shown here. The collection will be featured in a presentation entitled “We Rock, Tools and Trade of the American Indian” on Saturday November 9th at 10:00 a.m. Local attorney and artifact collector, Gary Bracken, will speak to the items and their use. Reservations required by calling 580-767-0427 by Nov. 8.
