Newkirk man injured in Sunday accident

A 73-year-old Newkirk man was transported by AirEvac to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, Sunday evening after an accident at Bender Road and Ranch Drive, northwest of Newkirk.

Wayne Gunwall was driving a 2016 Subaru Outback and collided with a trailer being pulled by a 1997 Volvo semi, driven by Christopher Graham, 42, of Hutchinson, Kansas. Graham was not injured.

The collision occurred about 5:52 p.m., according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Gunwall was admitted to the hospital in stable condition with head, trunk internal and external injuries, and injuries to his arms, the Patrol reported.

The Patrol’s report stated Gunwall was westbound on Bender and Graham was northbound on Ranch Drive. The report said Graham failed to yield from a stop sign covered by brush and Gunwall’s vehicle struck the trailer Graham was pulling.

The cause of the collision was determined to be failure  to yield.
