East student council members make blankets for PreK students

East Middle School Student Council members made and presented blankets to the students at the Washington Prekindergarten Center.

According to the East Student Council Sponsor Susan Schatz, “This was a community service and human relations project we could include on our Honor Council Application for the fall OAMJHSC Leadership Conference we attend annually. I was brainstorming ideas for service projects for my Student Council students, and East teacher Lorrie Layton gave me the idea to make blankets for the prekindergarten students, because the principal said some of her students did not have a blanket. Then I contacted the principal, Tina Fisher, and she was very excited about it and said that would be awesome. So we made the decision to make them and deliver them personally to the students.”

Schatz said the students worked very hard on the blankets so that any child that didn’t have a blanket could have one.

“The blankets they made came in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and themes,” Schatz said. “Everyone in the Student Council hopes the children will love the blankets we made for them. We really enjoyed making them and hope they will enjoy them too.”

East Student Council member Mercedes Pemberton-Sixkiller said, “It was so exciting to be making blankets for the kids. When I saw their faces light up with joy, I was so happy! The kids were so thankful for the blankets, and it was a great experience to see them so happy. It brought joy to my heart as a big sister. We learned teamwork and we also got to give the kids blankets, which is payment in itself. The kids were so welcoming and polite.”

“It was really fun to make blankets for the kids at Washington PreK Center,” said East Student Council member Elissa Rowton. “I really enjoyed going to Washington and seeing how happy it made the kids when we gave them the blankets.”
