Darien Monhatwa

October 11, 1999 – May 5, 2019

Heaven gained an angel on May 5, 2019. Darien Elijah Monhatwa beloved son of Jeffery Monhatwa and Pearl Walton went to meet the creator following a motorcycle accident in Oklahoma City.

Darien was born October 11, 1999 at Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City. From the time he was born he had a smile that was mischievous and could steal your heart.

Darien was very athletic, he lettered in football, wrestling, track and cheer at Newkirk High school. Number 12 could be seen on the field in his pink socks playing his heart out. I remember when he got his first pin. He was so excited. That was it, he was hooked on wrestling. He loved being on the cheer squad traveling and competing. He enjoyed team sport. He was a strong swimmer and worked one summer as a lifeguard.

He was very energetic; at an early age he was introduced to motorcycles and ATV’s. Many hours were spent on trails and making family outings riding dirt bikes. Darien loved the outdoors hunting, fishing, camping and being with his friends and family.

Darien was a member of Kaw Nation and was very involved with the tribal youth, earning the Leadership award in 2017 at Native American Leadership Day at Northern Oklahoma College.

Darien graduated from Del City High School in 2018. The best graduation present he received was his daughter, Tegan Raelynn. That little girl was the light of his life. He worked as an electrician apprentice. He was working on his life and had plans to join the Marine Corp.

Darien was preceded in death by his Grandfathers Fred Walton and Bart Martin, Great grandmothers Henrietta Williams and Carrie Vela.

Darien is survived by his daughter Tegan, father Jeffery and mother Pearl and Step Father Joe Barker. Grandfather Harvey Monhatwa and grandmothers Lynn Williams and Norma Walton. Four brothers Dominic, Dakota, Evan Monhatwa and Joe Barker Jr. One sister Nevaeh. Aunts Frankie Littledeer, Kathrine Quick, Rebecca Monhatwa and Nora McCartney, Norma Garcia, Ricka Gonzales, Teresa Walton and Lydia Orta. Two uncles Carlos Walton and Eliseo Garcia. Darien is survived by many cousins but those he shared most of his life with are Damien, Anna and Devon Littledeer, Daniel Romero, Marissa Dole, Julissa Garcia, Kyla Power, Eli Walton and William Murray

Darien had many significant friends (his bros) in Newkirk and Oklahoma City. He loved and was loved by many. Daren left this earth doing what he loved – riding his bike.

Traditional tribal services will be held Tuesday evening at the Kanza Gym in Newkirk at 7:00pm. A noon feast will take place on Wednesday May 8th at the gym with services to follow. Burial will be at the Washunga Cemetery north of Newkirk. Pastor Jim White will officiate.

Casket Bearers will be Eli Walton, William Murray, Mike McCoy, Tanner Pappan, Daniel Romero, and Jeremiah Manual.
