Oklahoma Senate to consider $40M for Indian museum

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – The Oklahoma Senate is expected to consider a plan to take $40 million from the state’s Unclaimed Property Fund to help finish a Native American museum in Oklahoma City.

A bill containing the plan is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in the full Senate. The measure is likely to face resistance in the House.

The $40 million in state funds would be used to match $40 million in private donations from tribes, companies and other donors that have been pledged to complete the project.

Seven years after the start of construction on the sprawling $170 million museum at the crossroads of Interstates 35 and 40 in Oklahoma City the project remains unfinished, but the Legislature has balked in recent years at providing more money.
