TULSA, Okla. (AP) – The Oklahoma State Department of Education has found that Tulsa Public Schools failed to meet federal requirements for students with disabilities.
The Tulsa World reports that the Department investigated a complaint by parent Carmon Pool Drummond and found that the district failed to develop a written plan for each of its more than 7,000 students eligible for special education.
The federal Individualized Education Program requires annual goals, including academic and functional goals, for each student.
Investigators instead found generic goals for the majority of the students.
The district must conduct a review of every special education student’s goals by the end of April and implement a plan to correct all noncompliance issues by the end of May. Tulsa Public Schools also must train its special education staff in how to create individualized goals for students by August 30th.
