The Latest: Crutcher family ‘disappointed’ in DOJ decision

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – An attorney for the family of an unarmed black man killed by a now-former Tulsa police officer says they are not surprised that no federal civil rights charges will be filed in the death.
Lawyer Demario Solomon-Simmons says the family of Terence Crutcher is “disappointed, but unfortunately we’re not surprised” with the Department of Justice’s decision not to pursue charges against Betty Shelby. Solomon-Simmons says the standard of proof is so high to prove someone willfully violated another person’s civil rights that the system is set up to protect law enforcement.
U.S. Attorney Trent Shores on Friday announced the closure of the investigation into whether Shelby willfully used unreasonable force on Crutcher when she shot and killed him in September 2016.
Shelby was acquitted by a Tulsa County jury. She testified that she thought he was reaching for a gun.
