Highway Conditions Alert

Ponca City Now - February 27, 2019 12:27 pm

Highway conditions are slick and hazardous through most of western, central and northern Oklahoma. With additional precipitation falling and freezing temperatures expected to continue throughout the day, drivers are urged to use extreme caution if they must travel in these areas.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews continue to treat highways and bridges including in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas. In the Oklahoma City metro, a thin glaze of ice is covering roadways and areas may have low visibility due to fog and mist. In the Tulsa metro, roads are wet but could turn slick and hazardous as temperatures drop. In all areas of western, central and northern Oklahoma, travelers should be alert to changing weather this afternoon and drive for the conditions.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

• Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.

• Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.

• Be aware of “black ice,” which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.

• Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.

NOTE: Additional advisories will be sent from this office as conditions change.
