First flu death in Kay county

According to a press release from Kay County Health Department the first flu death of the season in Kay county has been reported.

During the last week five deaths have been reported.

The deaths occured in Kay, LeFlore, Osage, Pittsburg and Tulsa counties.

According to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, flu-associated hospitalizations have nearly doubled in the past week.

Since Sept. 29 the largest number flu-related hospitalizations has been with patients older than 50.

The Ponca City office of the health department will be giving flu shots tomorrow from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.

Flu shots will also be given during regular general clinic hours Monday from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.

The Blackwell office will be giving shots at the same time.

Blackwell will also have a special flu clinic Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Kay county health department recommends a flu shot for anyone older than six months.

The flu vaccine provides protection for the person who gets it, and reduces the chance of spreading it.

The health department wants to remind you to follow these preventative tips:

1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water

2. Use tissues to cover coughs and sneezes, and washing your hands after. When tissues are not available use your sleeve, not your hand.

3. Stay home from work, school and other public places if you are sick.
