NOC offers student mentoring program

First Generation students at NOC have an opportunity to enroll in a mentoring program to assist them during their college career at NOC.

The program is administered by Language Arts Instructor Stacey Frazier.

“We are trying to bring faculty and staff mentors together with our first generation student population,” Frazier said.  “We want to have mentors who can assist students in addition to their academic adviser.”

According to the U.S. Dept. of Education, first generation students are “individuals whose parents/guardians do not have bachelor’s degrees.”

According to Frazier, the mission of the program is as follows:

1. Promote student success through mentoring support provided by faculty and staff.
2. Engage and connect students with faculty, staff and community advocates while helping students meet their career and degree objectives.
3. Provide academic and social support required to ensure proper intervention with students.

Perks to the program include: access to additional academic advising, assistance with on-line tutoring resources, counseling and disability services and increased opportunities for fostering academic relationships.

Frazier’s hope is that mentors/mentees can have an on campus activity during the semester.

“Mentors will be contacting their mentees in September,” she said.  “We hope a large number of students will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

The program started in the Spring 2018 semester and is available for the Stillwater, Enid and Tonkawa campuses.
