A fatal collision occurred on Sunday, August 27th, at 5:34 AM on I-35 northbound, mile marker 221 in Blackwell.
Involved in the collision was a 2014 Toyota Tundra driven by Byron Richmond, a 44-year-old white male from Edmond. Richmond was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner.
Also involved was a 2021 Ford F-350 driven by Earl Hayden York, a 23-year-old white male from Longwood, Florida. York was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, by Medi-flight and admitted in critical condition due to head and internal trunk injuries.
A 2022 Chevy Silverado driven by David Boisvert, a 54-year-old white male from Olathe, Kansas, was part of the incident but without injuries.
Lastly, a 1997 Lincoln Town Car driven by Jose Hernandez, a 47-year-old Hispanic male from Wichita, Kansas, was involved but also resulted in no injuries.
The sequence of events unfolded as Richmond, for reasons unknown, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes with his Toyota Tundra. Richmond collided head-on with York’s Ford F-350 leading Boisvert’s Chevy Silverado to impact the passenger side of York’s vehicle. In an attempt to avoid the impact, Hernandez swerved and collided with the cable barrier.
The cause of the collision is currently under investigation. Richmond, the driver of the Toyota Tundra, is suspected to have been under the influence at the time of the accident. All drivers aside from York were using seatbelts. There were no passengers at the time of the accident.
The report was investigated by Trooper Aaron Crompton #851 of the Kay and Noble county detachment of Troop K, with assistance from various agencies including the Blackwell Police Department, Kay County Sheriff’s Office, Blackwell Fire Department, Blackwell EMS, Oklahoma State Medical Examiner, Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and Medi-Flight.
