Sheriff warns vandals to stop damage

Kay County Sheriff Steve Kelley said Thursday that his office has been notified by the County Commissioners and citizens of rural Kay County of several road signs, stop signs and bridges being vandalized by either graffiti or gunfire.

“If anyone sees this type of activity occurring, I would ask that you please contact the Sheriff’s Office. If you are able to obtain any vehicle description and/or tag number, this would greatly help us in the investigation,” Kelley said.

“These types of vandalisms are very costly to the county and could endanger the public if the signs are not visible or not replaced. These signs, such as stop signs, curve signs, etc., are there to help prevent accidents and possibly injuring someone,” he said.

“If someone is caught defacing, causing malicious injury or destruction of these signs, they could be charged, at a minimum, with a misdemeanor. If caught doing this crime, and it causes injury to someone —  for example an auto accident — you could be charged with a more serious felony charge,” he said.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking everyone not cause damage to the county road signs.

The Sheriff’s Office will be placing cameras at different location in hopes of preventing this type of activity. Anyone  caught on camera will be charged.
