Rider of motorized scooter dies in accident near Arkansas City

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. The Arkansas City Police Department is assisting the Kansas Highway Patrol with investigating a fatal accident Monday afternoon in southeast Ark City.

The Arkansas City Police and Fire-EMS departments were dispatched about 3:45 p.m. for a report of a motorcycle-vehicle accident at the intersection of East Madison Avenue and the U.S. 77 bypass.

A 66-year-old rural Arkansas City male riding a motorized scooter was westbound on Madison, crossing the bypass, when his vehicle was struck by an eastbound pickup truck driven by a 68-year-old rural Winfield male that was turning left onto the bypass to proceed northbound.

The rider of the scooter was transported by ambulance to South Central Kansas Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries. The other driver did not sustain any injuries.

The bypass was blocked off to through traffic for about an hour and a half at Chestnut Avenue and Mill Road while KHP conducted its investigation.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating this accident. ACPD assisted with family notification and traffic control, and is handling initial media inquiries. Further information about this accident, including the identities of the two motorists, will be made available on the KHP website once its report is uploaded.
