Red Flag Fire Warning issued for most of the state Friday

Ponca City Now - March 16, 2018 9:20 am

The National Weather Services has issued a Red Flag Warning for most of Oklahoma until 8 p.m. Friday.  Due to the strong winds, low humidity and heat, the wildfire danger is greatly increased.

Ponca City Emergency Management Director Paula Cain said there were several dangerous wildfires in Kay County on Thursday.

“A tiny ember can start a fire that will be hard to stop in these conditions,” Cain said.

Increased fire danger will continue well into next week.

Cain also said this is the last winter weekend, and Saturday will be very nice with temperatures dropping back into the mid-60s.

“On Sunday, we see out first severe weather forecast in quite some time,” she said. “At this time the target area is across northern Oklahoma sometime after 2 p.m.  There is a slight risk for some severe thunderstorms, with some large hail and damaging winds possible.”
