Obituary for Elwood Calls Him

Elwood S Calls Him of Tonkawa passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was 53 years old. He was being cared for at the St. Francis Hospital at the time of his passing. He was born on July 20, 1964 in Pawnee, Ok to Reverend George Calls Him and Imogene Primeaux Calls Him. He was raised in Arkansas City, Kansas. in 1976 the family moved to White Eagle, Oklahoma. He attended the Chilocco Indian School as well as the Sequoyah Indian School. in 1983 he moved back to Tonkawa and Married the love of his life, his wife Sarah Allen Calls Him. They shared 34 beautiful years of marriage. He was very kind and loved to smile. He enjoyed attending pow wows and dancing. He was a gourd dancer as well as a Champion Fancy Dancer. HE was the head of the Yellow Berry Descendants Gourd Dance Group. Elwood was a direct descendant of Yellow Berry and Fire Shaker. He made regalia for tribal events including bustles for war dancing. He enjoyed cooking for events and fishing with his grandkids. He was a member of the Ponca City Gourd Dance Society and the Ponca Indian United Methodist Church. His Ponca name was Ga-Thay-Dah-Na-Babee. Hawk Flying High.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah of the home, four daughters Challis and husband Steve Gottman of Durango, Colorado, Dawn and husband Brian Rowe of Stillwater, Cori Calls Him and Jordan Clark both of Tonkawa, four sons Joey Clark of Tonkawa, Elwood Calls Him, Jr. of Tonkawa, Jodi Calls Him of Tonkawa and Robert Paschal, numerous grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, six sisters Augustine Calls Him Paschal, Jolene Calls Him, Christine Calls Him Eagle, Georgina Calls Him, Delores Calls Him, Thomasita Little Crow, and Paulene Enloe, two brothers Melvin P Calls Him, Sr. and Elden R Calls Him, Sr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his maternal and paternal grandparents, three brothers George, Ed , and Mark Calls Him, two sisters baby girl Calls Him and Kay Christy Calls Him., a son twin boy, and one grandson Dominique Paschal.

The family will be heading to the Tonkawa Gymnasium on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. Supper will begin at 5:30p.m. and the evening services will begin at 7:30 p.m.

A traditional noon feast will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Tonkawa gymnasium with burial at the Tonkawa Tribal Cemetery to follow. Pall bearers for the service will include Elwood Calls Him, Jr, Joey Clark, Robert Paschal, T.J. Calls Him, Dewayne Warrior, and Eldon Calls Him, Jr. Honorary Bearers will include T.C Cole, Melvin Calls Him, Sr., Melvin Calls Him, Jr., Eldon Calls Him, Sr., Jodi Calls Him, and Brian Rowe.

Friday night, soon after the wake service ends, the Native American Church will be holding a meeting in the Gymnasium. Brother Arlen Lightfoot will be running this meeting. All Native American Church Members are invited to attend.
