Workshop to focus on strategies on poverty

The Ponca City Area Literacy Council is working with the Salvation Army and OKDHS to bring “Bridges Out of Poverty- Strategies for Professionals and Communities” to the area.
This workshop for community leaders is Thursday, March 8, at Pioneer Technology Center.

Bridges Out of Poverty is a one-day training workshop, where participants will create a mental model of poverty, review poverty research, examine a theory of change and analyze poverty through the prism of the hidden rules of class, resources, family structure and language. The training will put into words what many professionals and community members have experienced. Throughout the training, participants will receive specific strategies for improving outcomes for people living in poverty, but the focus of the workshop is to provide a broad overview of concepts.
The Bridges Out of Poverty community support program helps communities:
- Move individuals from poverty to self-sufficiency
- Reduce social costs related to crime, poor health, and welfare
- Strengthen educational attainment and job skills
- Enhance economic development
- Improve on-the-job productivity
- Revitalize neighborhoods
- Build sustainable communities where everyone can live well.
This workshop will lay the groundwork for continuing work, through the Literacy Council and Salvation Army, to provide community support and training for “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting By World” for under resourced community members, and “Getting Ahead While Getting Out” for the Kay County Detention Center.
