Lester Boyd Ebert Sr. – Veteran

Lester Boyd Ebert Sr. of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Monday morning, January 8, 2018, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 97 years.

Lester Boyd Ebert Sr. was born on January 25, 1920, in Protection, Kansas, to Glen J. and Ruth (Allen) Ebert. He grew up in the Braman area and attended Triumph School before attending Braman High School. Following his education he began working for Doyle McCullough in the oilfields. He married Waneta Mae Barrows on October 31, 1939, in Wellington, Kansas. They soon moved to Illinois where he worked as a welder in the oilfields for a few years before moving to Houston, Texas. While there he worked in a shipyard for four years. He then entered the United States Navy where he served during World War II. After several months he joined the SeaBees and served in Okinawa. Following his discharge he returned to Kay County and working in the petroleum industry. In 1946 they moved to Washington State where he worked as a welder and mechanic for Ford Tractor. In 1949 they moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where he worked at Ladd Air Force Base and also in the construction business. In 1955 they returned to Blackwell and began working on construction of Blackwell Public School buildings, the First Christian Church and many other structures in Blackwell. He retired from full-time construction in 1985. He later assisted his son in building oilfield tanks. His wife preceded him in death on February 2, 1998, and he later married Maxine Evans on November 25, 1999, in Blackwell. She preceded him in death on September 12, 2014, and he continued to make Blackwell his home. He was an active member of the First Church of God, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He also held membership in the carpenters union and the boilermakers union.

He is survived by two sons, Pat Ebert and wife Laura of Lewiston, Illinois, and Mike Ebert and wife Jeanne of Van Buren, Arkansas; a daughter, Darlene Wieland of Blackwell; a sister, Carol Roark and husband Wallace of Woods, Texas; two daughters-in-law, Vicki Ebert of Blackwell and Carmen Ebert of Pekin, Illinois; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren; and thirteen great great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carolyn Ebert; two sons, Gene Ebert and Les Ebert Jr., two brothers, Orville and Melford Ebert; five sisters, Velma Toni, Lela Kolb, Bonnie Hamilton, Evelyn Moore and Bernice Walters; four grandchildren, Celeste Ebert, Tony Ebert, Shannon Ebert and Micah Joy Hogan; a son-in-law, Frank Wieland; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Jo Ebert.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 11th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Ebert officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Larry Jernigan, Chris Ebert, Derry Ebert, Richard Looper, Will Decker and Tony Byers.
