Stephen R. Short
(February 14, 1949 – November 22, 2017)
Stephen Ray Short of Braman, Oklahoma, died early Wednesday morning, November 22, 2017, in the Select Specialty Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 68 years.
Stephen Ray Short was born on February 14, 1949, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Raymond Glen and Altha Lavora (McBride) Short. He grew up in Marland and graduated from Marland High School in 1967. Following his education he entered the United States Marine Corps serving during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge he entered Oklahoma State University for a semester. He then returned to Kay County and began working at the Blackwell Zinc Company. He later returned to school at Northern Oklahoma Junior College and received an associate degree. While at Northern, he also worked as a security officer for the college. In 1978 he began S and S Fence Company and worked as a fence contractor for thirty years. He married Connie Brooks in 1989 in Missouri and they made Braman their home. He was a member of the Braman American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed horses and music, especially singing.
He is survived by his mother, Altha Lavora Short of Blackwell; two daughters, Edna Deniese Mahoney of Roosevelt, Oklahoma, and Jessie Rae Wright of Blackwell; two sons, Luke Wayne Short and Richard Duke Short, both of Braman; a sister, Altha Coleen Blevins of Blackwell; an adopted sister, Connie Short of Ponca City; five brothers, Chris Short of Marland, Rodney Short of California, Brad Short of Blackwell, Mark Short of Blackwell and Runt Short of Blackwell; fifteen grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his father.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 27th in the Immanuel Baptist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Chris Short and Rev. Matt Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Braman Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Luke Short, Duke Short, Tyler Wright, Stephen Short, Trent Short and Austin Short. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be his five brothers.
A memorial has been established in his honor with the Braman American Legion Post 1229 in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
