Four Ponca City locations submitted for National Register of Historic Places

The State Historic Preservation Office on Thursday approved four Ponca City locations for submission to the National Register of Historic Places.

The four nominations will be forwarded to the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places for final consideration and a decision on placing the properties on the register.

The four local properties include:

• Roosevelt Elementary School at 815 East Highland Avenue.
• The McGraw House at 400 North Fourth Street.
• Attucks Community Center at 1001 South 12th Street.
• The 101 Rodeo Arena at 2600 North Ash Street.

Roosevelt Elementary School was submitted because of its architecture and importance to education in Ponca City. The period of historic significance was 1931.

The McGraw house was noted for its architecture. Its historical significance was 1910 to 1917.

Attucks Community Center was selected for its importance in education and for its contribution to black ethnic heritage. Its period of greatest historical significance was 1936 to 1966.

The 101 Rodeo Arena was noted for its contributions to entertainment and recreation. Its period of greatest historical significance was 1962 to 1968.

The nominations were approved by the State Historical Preservation Office at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. They will be forwarded to the National Park Service at the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., where the National Register is kept.

Listing in the National Register of Historic Places provides formal recognition of a property’s historical, architectural, or archeological significance based on national standards used by every state.
