About 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Kay County Deputy Jon Stieber conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation on I-35 just south of Tonkawa, OK.

During the traffic stop, Deputy Stieber’s suspicion of possible drug activity became very apparent due to the actions of the driver and passenger and of a history of recent drug related activity.

The driver, Alma Mendoza, had a confirmed Kay County warrant for her arrest. Deputy Stieber placed her into custody for the warrant and then deployed his canine partner to the outside compartment area of the vehicle. The dog alerted to the possibility of narcotics inside the vehicle.

Agents from the 8th District Attorney’s Task Force arrived to assist. During the search of the vehicle, Deputy Stieber located approximately 61.9 grams of methamphetamine and more than 4 grams of marijuana.

He also located several baggies, scales, drug paraphernalia and pills.

Both the driver and passenger, Shanie Gaston were arrested for Trafficking in CDS (meth) and Conspiracy to Traffic in controlled dangerous substances.

Both subjects were transported to the Kay County Detention Center.

“This kind of drug activity is what we as law enforcement need to continue to focus on and stop before these type of drugs come into Kay County,” Sheriff Steve Kelley said. “It was clear that this traffic stop prevented a significant amount of meth from coming into this county before it could be sold to the citizens and potentially causing or feeding to the terrible addictions of meth we have in our society.

“I am very pleased with the outcome and we will continue stopping as many people as possible that want to sell this poison in this area,” he said.
