John B Sutton, longtime Ponca City resident died Friday night, June 30, 2017, he was 80.
A Rosary Service will be held Friday, July 7 at 6:00 pm in the Chapel of the Trout Funeral Home with the Deacon Robinson, from St Mary’s Catholic Church, officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 8, 2017, 10 am at St Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Carson as celebrant. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.
Born March 16, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he was the youngest son of David Joseph Sutton and Dorothy Ann Kircher Sutton. His family relocated to Ponca City when he was 12 years old to open the Lincoln and Mercury Dealership. He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1955.
On January 1, 1960 he married Mary Martha Monsour and they had three children. John was the President of Sutton’s Lincoln Mercury for the majority of his career, then he happily took on a new role as the Director of the Marland Mansion and Estate, a role that fit his passion to serve his community. John was the Ponca City Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1975 and Volunteer of the Year in 1978, which speaks to his commitment to help his community which he did in a variety of roles over the years. He was past president of the Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, NW District Elk of the Year 2007, Ambuc National Big Hat President, Chairman of the Kaw Lake Association, Camp Fire President, Director of Camp McFadden just to name a few. John was also President of the Grand Prix Races that were held at Lake Ponca over the July 4th Holiday and one of the key people who helped bring the National Moto-X Races to Ponca. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, served on the Country Club Board, the Hospital Board, was President of The United Way and helped to start Crimes Stoppers. He was the major fundraiser for several community projects including Peach Tree Landing and the Ambuc Pool. He worked so diligently in all these endeavors to make Ponca City a better place for all to enjoy.
John is survived by his daughter Marty, her husband Jeff Garner, of McKinney, Texas; his two sons Mark, his wife Janice of Murrieta, California, David, his wife Kimberly of Garland, Texas; 8 grandchildren: Jarad Garner and his wife Loran of McKinney, Emily Scruggs and her husband Noah of Shreveport, Louisiana, Anna Alexander and her husband Dustin, Jenny Alexander and her husband Daniel all of Ruston, Louisiana, Madison and Morgan Sutton of Murrieta, Olivia and Conner Sutton of Garland and 5 Great Grandchildren Jaden Garner, McKinney, Ezra and Alyza Scruggs, Shreveport and Garner and Garyson Alexander of Ruston; a sister Ann McIlhargey of Lethbridge Alberta Canada, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years Mary, his parents, his brother David J. “Bud” Sutton, his wife Mary; his sisters Dorothy A. “Dode” Sutton, Betty E. Kappele, her husband Tom; three brother-in-laws; Mike McIlhargey, Jim F Monsour, his wife Jacque and Jack A. Monsour and his wife Connie.
Casket bearers will be Jarad Garner, Bobby Gibson, Steve Giddens, Gary Miles, Bill Rutz and Will Wanner. Honorary casket bearers will be the members of the Ponca City Ambucs and Elk Lodge.
The family has asked in lieu of flowers that Memorials be made to Camp McFadden, Inc. P.O. Box 1495, Ponca City, OK 74602 to build an Amphitheater named after Mary & John Sutton. The family will be at John’s home 2229 El Camino.
