45 homicides recorded in Tulsa in first 6 months of 2017
TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Following the deadliest month in Tulsa’s modern history, Oklahoma’s second largest city has recorded 45 homicides in the first six months of 2017.
The Tulsa World reports the number of homicides in Tulsa is about 32 percent more than the same period in 2016 and about a 55 percent increase from 2015.
The rate puts the city on track to break last year’s record number of homicides.
Fourteen people were killed in Tulsa in June, the most since at least 1989. This year Tulsa is averaging one homicide every four days. Fifteen years ago, Tulsa averaged one homicide about every 10 days.
The Police Department’s homicide detectives have closed 40 of this year’s 45 cases. A total of 32 of Tulsa’s 45 homicides this year were shot to death.
