Edgar David Snyder – Veteran

November 26, 1941 – June 23, 2017

A celebration of the life of David Snyder, 75, of Ponca City, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Ponca City. Burial will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Ponca City. Edgar David Snyder was born November 26, 1941, to Robert H. and Esther Williams Snyder, at Ponca City Hospital, and he passed away on Friday, June 23, 2017. He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1959. David attended one year of college at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma.

David married Sharrel Fisher on July 16, 1960. David and Sharrel had three children, Bart, Bret, and Robyn. On June 7, 1974, David married Barbara Harper and gained another son, Steve Harper. In mid-1960, David worked for Oklahoma Natural Gas. He then went to work at the Conoco refinery in 1968 as a first-class welder and, later, as a planner/scheduler. He retired from Conoco after 31 years of service in 1999.

Serving our Lord brought David great joy. He was an active member at First Baptist Church, Ponca City, for many years and served as director of the Adult 1 Sunday School class. Each year, he enjoyed hearing the Falls Creek reports from the church’s youth and seeing how God was working in their lives.

In 1960, David proudly enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard to serve our country. He went to Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia, and he was later assigned as company commander at Chilocco, Fairfax, and Ponca City. In 1975, David returned to Fort Benning, Georgia, to Advanced Officer Training School where he received his rank of Major.

David was a member of Ponca City Lodge No. 83 and served as Worshipful Master for two terms. He was also a York Rite member, an Eastern Star member, and a Scottish Rite 33rd Degree member. In 2009, David served as Most Illustrious Grand Master for the Grand Counsel of Cryptic Masons. One of his most cherished accomplishments was being appointed Grand Flag Bearer for the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the State of Oklahoma. David and Barbara made trips with the Red Cross of Constantine to attend meetings to help install new officers all over the United States.

For most of their married life, David and Barbara made their home in Ponca City. They purchased a house in the Bois D’Arc area and began an extensive remodel. In 1981, they purchased and remodeled Bois D’Arc Grocery, and, in 1983, started cooking Snyder’s fried chicken. They worked tenaciously to build up the business and to provide their customers with quality service. In 1998, they sold the store to their daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Chris Primeaux. Throughout their marriage, David and Barbara had the opportunity to enjoy several recreational trips to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and England.

After David’s retirement, he and his children embarked on a new adventure of raising cattle. David’s children and grandchildren have many stories of their outrageous escapades on the ”Snyder Ranch”. Most importantly to David was time spent with his family working hard and making memories along the way. David enjoyed his family very much, and he will be greatly missed.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, especially Carlena, David’s aide, and Amey, his nurse, for their compassionate care of David and their support for his family over the past several months.

David is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their precious puppy, ChiChi; his children, Bart and Cheryl Snyder, Bret and Nikki Snyder, and Robyn and Chris Primeaux, all of Ponca City; Steve and Allison Harper of College Station, Texas; his grandchildren, Brandon Snyder, Cody Primeaux, Becca Primeaux, Cheyenne Snyder, all of Ponca City, and Rachel Harper and Grant Harper of Houston, Texas; his nephews and their families, John and Lisa McCall and their children, Brandi McCall, Whitney and husband Justin Witt, and Tori McCall, all of Skiatook, Oklahoma; Joe and Shauna McCall and their son, Justin, of Petal, Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Patricia Wyrick; an infant sister; his niece, Roberta Wyrick; and his grandparents.

A viewing will be held at Grace Memorial Chapel on Monday, June 26, from noon until 8 pm, and on Tuesday, June 27, from 8 am to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions can be made either to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma or to the Falls Creek renovation fund through First Baptist Church, Ponca City.
